Jewish Week is as bad as it gets
I am shocked and astounded by Liel Leibovitz's article in the Jewish Week.
First of all I was misquoted. He pulled my sentences apart and put them together in a way that would suit him. I did not think that I needed to record the interviews I give to the Jewish Week.
Second of all, I told him that my position as president of the school of General Studies was NOT in any way to be a factor in the article. I made that clear a number of times, and yet he printed it anyway. When I speak, I speak as an individual, and in no way represent my office in doing so.
Third of all, he belittles the abuse felt by students. Can one say that a woman was not sexually harassed simply because "two dozen others" did not feel so.
Fourth, the English is not even clear--I thought copy editing was mandatory for journalists.
Fifth, the film was released today. Were he to wait a day with publication, he could have actually written a respectable article. I understand the Jewish week publishes on a weekly basis--but if it has taken the paper this long to investigate instances of abuse of Jews and Israelis on Columbia's campus, it could have waited another week.
As a former member of the executive board of the American Jewish Press Association, I can only express my utter revulsion.
I hope the Jewish Week will win back its credibility in my eyes and in the eyes of the students who have suffered abuse at Columbia.
